SUPRAMENTAL DESCENT - 1

By Kiara Windrider

-- The Mother, February 29, 1956  “This evening the Divine presence, concrete and material, was there present amongst you. I had a form of living gold, bigger than the universe, and I was facing a huge and massive golden door which separated the world from the Divine. As I looked at the door, I knew and willed, in a single movement of consciousness, that ‘the time has come’, and lifting with both hands a mighty golden hammer, I struck one blow, one single blow on the door and the door was shattered to pieces. Then the Supramental Light and Force and Consciousness rushed down upon earth in an uninterrupted flow.”

Before anything began, before there were worlds of creation anchored in space and time, there was Primordial Consciousness, the Infinite Self, an undifferentiated field of Universal Consciousness. This Primordial Consiousness dwells at the heart of all things, while also Self-existing beyond the worlds of creation. Since this Consciousness exists beyond Time, there was never a time when it was not, and since it exists beyond space, it is eternally present beyond all dimensions of the physical universe.

All creation is holographically linked within this Primordial Consciousness, sometimes simply referred to as the Universal Self, or the Spirit that Moves through All Things. It is our deepest identity, an undifferentiated state of awareness beyond all experience of separation and duality. While pervading everything within the created worlds, the Self remains at the same time untouched beyond creation.

Primordial Consciousness is constantly seeking to express itself through the act of creation, and to find itself reflected within the field of creation. All things within creation thus have a form aspect as well as a formless aspect, oscillating back and forth between these two states of awareness trillions of times every second. Although the science of creation was well understood by ancient yogis, the twin sciences of quantum mechanics and plasma cosmology are also beginning to formulate how this process works.

The problem is that even though Primordial Consciousness exists within all Creation, it is not necessarily aware of Itself within the field of creation. The act of creation creates a veiling effect, known as ‘maya’, which tends to hide the aspect of us within creation from the aspect of us beyond creation. And this is the source of all our perceived separation and suffering.

Essentially, the supramental descent is about removing this veil, so that all Creation can experience itself clearly and transparently as Primordial Consciousness. As we can imagine, this is not a little thing. As long as time and space have existed, we have experienced this veiling of ‘maya’.  This has been necessary up to a certain point in the involutionary journey. But now finally, physical consciousness has evolved to a point where it is ready to experience itself as primordial consciousness.

This is the opportunity that stands before us at this time. Gaia, in her cosmic identity as Mahashakti, or Cosmic Mother, has been given the role and responsibility for making this happen, and so has been patiently evolving the human species, along with the cetaceans, to make possible this great task. We have incarnated on earth at this time, from across vast expanses of time and space, to unravel the inherited density of Maya.

This moment that the Mother refers to in February 1956 was a pivotal moment in this work. But this was simply a seed being sown. It is up to us now to continue anchoring the supramental light in order to consciously shape the next wave of cosmic evolution.

“But what has happened, the really new thing, is that a new world is born... It is not the old one transforming itself, it is a new world which is born. And we are right in the midst of thIs period transition where the two are entangled - where the other still persists all-powerful and entirely dominating the ordinary consciousness, but where the new one is quietly slipping in, still very modest, unnoticed - unnoticed to the extent that outwardly it doesn’t disturb anything very much, for the time being, and that in the consciousness of most people it is even altogether imperceptible. And yet it is working, growing - until it is strong enough to assert itself visibly.”

-- The Mother

If a new world has been born, as the Mother claims, why can’t we see it? Why do we seem to be moving closer to the edge of the precipice each passing day? Why so much insanity in our political leadership? Why doesn’t someone tell our governments, our CEO’s, our bankers and decision-makers, that it’s time to move on? Why the ever increasing climate catastrophes?

Our experience of reality has much to do with our perceptions. We see what we look to see. The new world is too subtle to see clearly with our outer senses. But this doesn’t mean it’s not already here, or that it isn’t powerfully moving through our awareness.

There is a story that when European ships first landed on the shores of North America, the original inhabitants of that land simply couldn’t see them. They didn’t have a concept in their minds for ships that big, and so it simply did not register in their consciousness. The shamans, accustomed to stretching the boundaries of awareness, were the first to perceive them, and once they did, everyone else was able to see them as well.

Perhaps it is not so different with us, and our expectations of the supramental world. Would it help us notice this world ‘quietly slipping in’ if we knew what to look for?

Light always casts a shadow, and the stronger the light the darker its shadow. As the light of greater self-awareness enters into our world, it also brings up the shadows buried deep in our collective history, shadows of genocide and war, aggression and greed, hatred and fear. These things are becoming more visible, and the world of nature is reflecting this, but we must remember not to mistake shadows for darkness. It is only because of the increasing illumination that these shadows are being made visible.

To go a step further, the supramental light is a light that transcends duality, and illuminates from within. It takes us beyond entrenched positions of good and evil, right and wrong, and can therefore dispel darkness in a non-oppositional way. If things appear to be bad, can we imagine how much worse they could be if the forces of darkness would truly have their way? What if we realised that darkness was another face of the same light? And that the Great Mother can embrace it all?

Whenever there is a ‘descent’ there is corresponding resistance. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother speak of their experience with the four Asuras, essentially anti-divine forces, at work in the world today. There is the Asura of Darkness, the Asura of Suffering, The Asura of Falsehood, and the Asura of Death. These are the forces that are so outwardly apparent, and which seem to be in control of current global events.

With the descent of this new vibratory consciousness, all our obsolete human structures are being demolished. However, Sri Aurobindo emphasized that although the changes will be enormous they would not be necessarily catastrophic. The power of Truth automatically erases Falsehood, and our world for the most part consists of Falsehood. Yet, the Supramental, he maintained, carried a power of harmonization which could overcome this resistance by means other than dramatic struggle and violence. The Asuras will eventually be absorbed into their original emanations of Light, Life, Beauty and Truth. With all the violence still persisting in our world, it is interesting to imagine the scale of destruction we could have experienced already if not for this power of harmonization!

“Man’s greatness is not in what he is, but in what he makes possible. An immortal soul is somewhere within him, even if seldom active in most people, while an eternal spirit overshadows him, even if obstructed from descent by the hard lid of his constructed personality. There is a great divine plan in motion, even if the evidence of the outer senses seems to contradict it.”

-- Sri Aurobindo

Sri Aurobindo recognized that humankind is going through an evolutionary crisis. A stage has been reached in which the human mind has made tremendous strides on the one hand, but is left hopelessly inadequate to prevent its own extinction as a species. Meanwhile, as the Mother testified before her death in 1973, a consciousness higher than the human rational mind, what may be termed the Supermind, has recently been established in the fields of the Earth, and is active there. Our task now is to bring it down into cellular consciousness.

Evolution took a great leap forward with the origins of Life, and later with the emergence of Mind. We are now at the threshold of another leap forward, even more momentous, as we prepare for the emergence of the Supermind.

Sri Aurobindo speaks about four stages of human evolution. The first was the ‘animal human’, a species of humanity exemplified in indigenous tribes around the world, that lived in Instinctive unity with the rest of creation. Then came the ‘human human’, a species that began to develop the rational functioning of the mind, but unfortunately descended into a state of separation and duality in the process. Many are now emerging into the ‘divine human’ a state of conscious unity where we collectively move past the duality of the rational mind into a connection with heart and soul, experiencing the world not as something outside and separate from ourselves but directly within. And finally, with the supramental descent, we are preparing to enter a fourth stage of evolution where the Supermind, a unified level of Cosmic Mind, descends into cellular consciousness, transforming the physical body into a body of light capable of supporting the infinite creative potential of the Self.

The great work of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother was in bringing the Supramental down into the cellular consciousness of their own bodies. Since matter is a unified field, the Supramental consciousness was simultaneously being brought into the collective body of the Earth, awaiting the moment when it would flower into its full manifestation in the physical world.

As we confront the unique challenges of our modern age, we come to the realisation that we cannot solve the problems of our times from the same level of consciousness that created them. But there is a level of consciousness beyond our own, the Supramental, now descending and permeating through our collective experience, which IS capable of accomplishing this seemingly impossible task. We are born to give this supramental force voice and expression.

I find myself greatly comforted by spiritual researchers like Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, whose visions and understandings were sourced in the direct experience of an expanded cosmic paradigm. We cannot remain in denial about the ecological and political realities on our planet. However, the pathway to the Age of Light is in affirming the new realities that are emerging among us. Somewhere between an ungrounded spiritual escapism based on denial, and a narcissistic preoccupation with gloom and doom, we can choose to intentionally and purposefully envision a brave new world based on the deepest truth of our being. In order to do this we must consciously face our own shadows, seek a genuine hope, commit to rebirth, and open to the light of our guiding truth.

We can only go as high as we are willing to go deep, and it is often in the very depths that we find our greatest light. This is where we find the power and the hope to sustain us and to transform our world. As we enter and embrace our deeply fragmented inner worlds, the light of grace begins to shine upon us and through us, and we discover that spirit and matter, human and divine, heaven and earth, are not as separate from each other as we may have imagined!

“Man is a transitional being; he is not final. For in him and high beyond him ascend the radiant degrees which climb to a divine supermanhood. The step from man to superman is the next approaching achievement in earth’s evolution. There lies our destiny and the liberating key to our troubled and limited human existence - inevitable because it is at once the intention of the inner spirit and the logic of Nature’s process.”

-- Sri Aurobindo

From an evolutionary pespective, first comes Matter, which evolves somehow to create various forms of Life, increasingly complex forms of Mind, and eventually to animal and human Consciousness. The involutionary perspective is the reverse of this. First there was Primordial Consciousness, expressing itself through Cosmic Mind, extending itself through a fabric of time and space into the creation of Matter, and eventually the creation of Life.

These two perspectives are diametrically opposite but at the same time complementary. Life evolves out of Matter, Mind out of Life, because they are already latent there. Matter is a form of veiled Life, Life is a form of veiled Mind. The question that Sri Aurobindo asked was, may not Mind be a form and veil of an even higher power, the Spirit, which would be Supramental in its nature? What lies beyond our human species?

I find that if I can stretch my perspective wide enough most things fall into place on their own. One of the things that has always baffled scientists is the initial act of creation. They go back 13.6 billions of years in time and arrive at what they call the Big Bang. But what existed before this? Where did this big bang originate? Where did time itself originate? Can anything emerge out of nothing?

In the Vedic understanding of Creation, this Nothing is a veiled form of Everything. The moment of Creation is that moment where Involution and Evolution come together for the first time, where Spirit, or Primordial Consciousness moves through a mysterious veil of Space and Time known as Maya, and expresses itself as Matter. Quantum physicists recognise that creation and dissolution are simply gateways in consciousness, and we can travel back and forth. As we enter the building blocks of matter, down through atoms and subatomic particles and quark and bosons, we eventually arrive into the infinite energy field of Primordial Spirit. And this same Primordial Spirt is constantly expressing itself through atoms and cells and DNA strands to shape the evolution of matter.

What if matter is continually being created from the substrate of primordial spirit, and constantly returning back into its identity as spirit. What if this act of creation and dissolution takes place trillions of times every second? A movie being broadcasted on a screen consists of individual frames moving too fast for the eyes to distinguish, giving us the illusion of continuity. What if spirit and matter are oscillating back and forth too fast for human consciousness to perceive, providing this same illusion of continuity on the screen of space and time?

Here we begin to understand the screen of illusion known as Maya. The illusion is not that matter isn’t real, the illusion is the idea that matter exists separate from an indwelling spirit. It is this indwelling spirit, according to Sri Aurobindo, that continues to guide our onward journey, an evolutionary impulse deep within our cells that pushes us from within to evolve beyond man into superman.

When he talks about a superman, he is not talking about artificially enhanced humans, nor about special powers limited to a few privileged individuals, but an entire species emerging naturally and spontaneously in the course of time. There is an evolutionary impulse moving within our genetic blueprint, an intelligence deep within our cells, which is being inspired by an innate spirit towards ever greater perfection. And once we understand how, we come to a point in evolution where we can consciously accelerate and participate in our own transcendence.

This is Gaia’s gift to us at this time, and the gift we are offering back to Gaia!

“For a developed consciousness, the Supermind is already realised somewhere in a domain of the subtle physical. It already exists there visible, concrete, and expresses itself in forms and activities. And when one is in tune with this domain, when one lives there, one has a very strong feeling that this world would only have to be condensed, so to say, for it to become visible to all. What would then be interesting would be to develop this inner perception which would put you into contact with the Supramental truth which is already manifested, and is veiled from you only for want of appropriate organs to enter into relation with it.”

--The Mother

The Mother is pointing to a realm, beyond the screen of Maya, where the Supramental world already exists. We are not creating it so much as unveiling it, seeing with our outer senses what has already been established in the subtle planes of reality.

Many decades ago, hypnotherapists Chet Snow and Helen Wambach wrote a book called Mass Dreams of the Future, where they catalogued people’s experiences of going not into past lives but into a future world of 2100 AD and beyond. Their experiences fall into four distinct scenarios, ranging from an apocalyptic world devastated by nuclear war and ecocide,  to a world where survivors live in domes or off-world communities to protect against a harsh external environment, to a beautiful green world where people are telepathically linked and have learned to live in harmony with each other and with nature.

Could there be different timelines for the future based on collective choices we make? Could these all be equally real in their own dimensional reality? In earlier blogs we explored the impact of a galactic superwave, a solar outburst or a geomagnetic reversal on earth. Could events like this have the potential to initiate a multiplicity of co-existing timelines, where we get to experience the consequences of all possible choices, including a supramental world that already exists in the subtle physical planes?

About twenty years ago I had embarked on a vision quest, seeking answers to this same question. During this time I was shown distinct timelines for the future, but also the possibility that we could collective shape a single planetary reality where we have alchemically transmuted the forces of duality. This is the same world that the Mother envisions, and which we can already begin to perceive as we develop our inner perceptions.

As we perceive, so we create. As we develop our subtle senses to perceive this supramental world we are already giving it shape and form. The Mother describes the supramental body as being adaptable and plastic, light and luminous. As we learn to inhabit these new bodies we see the world differently, and far more comprehensively. We develop organs and senses capable of interacting with subtle and causal planes of existence. We have access to energies of life that allow technologies to flourish based on principles of harmony rather than entropy. Our bodies are no longer subject to decay and death. Our minds have access to creative capacities emerging from realms not yet imagined. We experience the world of nature as our own inner landscape.

Many seekers tend to see the body as an obstacle, the mind as an obstruction, and the ego as an impediment in our quest for spiritual realisation. Although this may be true to the extent that these instruments are ruled by Unconscious tendencies, these are also the means, once refined and aligned with heart, soul and spirit, through which we can achieve divine embodiment. Sri Aurobindo describes the supramental world as constructed of a frequency of matter which allows the power of Primordial Consciousness to step through without being affected by intervening veils of duality. With the descent of the supramental force, it becomes possible for these lower bodies to become conscious vehicles for the Divine to manifest within Creation. We develop highly refined senses, and a nervous system capable of reflecting the love, wisdom and power of the Eternal Self as we consciously and spontaneously co-create a new earth in accordance with this secret evolutionary plan.

“The transition from mind to Supermind is a passage from Nature into Supernature. For that very reason it cannot be achieved by a mere effort of our mind or our unaided aspiration. Overmind and Supermind are involved and hidden in the earth-nature, but in order that they may emerge in us, there is needed a pressure of the same process already formulated in their full natural force on their own superconscient planes. The powers of the Superconscience must descend into us and uplift us and transform our being.”

-- Sri Aurobindo

The transition from Mind to Supermind reflects an evolutionary ascent from our current human species into a supramental species. What would ordinarily take eons can be hastened with conscious participation. But this is an intensive process and doesn’t happen all at once. Sri Aurobindo refers to four intervening stages that the mind must pass through as we transition from the rational mind to Supermind.

The rational mind as it currently exists is capable of defining, analysing and interpreting reality, but can never perceive the world directly as it is. There is always a veil between what exists and my own interpretation of this. I cannot experience a person or object directly, only through layers of comparison, interpretation and judgment which dilute and distort the truth.

The higher mind is the first step towards transcending this limitation. It sees things from a ‘big picture’ perspective, an eagle’s eye view of the world. We go beyond the petty domain of the personal ego, where our perceptions are constantly being shaped by subconscious filters, to a larger perspective where we can equally understand a wider range of perspectives than our own. It is the first step in going beyond duality and separation.

The illumined mind goes further. Here the light of the soul breaks through into physical consciousness, illuminating the mind, heart and body with its luminous power. As our senses become more refined, we begin to see past the density of apparent reality, activating a range of perception that includes the clairvoyant, clauraudient and clairsentient.

With the intuitive mind we experience perception through identity. We simply become the truth we seek. When I observe a person or object I no longer experience them as something separate from myself. Layered veils of interpretation and judgment fall away, and the boundary between self and other, between inside and outside, begins to dissolve.

With the overmind, we begin to enter a collective state of consciousness, the ability to sense the human species as a collective entity, or Gaia as a planetary field of life. There is still an ability to think in terms of right and wrong, good and bad, but now we are looking at a planetary or cosmic scale of things. We are entering the archetypal realms of the gods and goddesses.

And then finally comes the supermind. This level of the mind cannot be achieved from below. It is a descent of grace in response to ardent aspiration, entering the worlds of creation from beyond the veils of maya. It represents a creative truth-consciousness that has the power to shape new versions of reality from a perspective of absolute unity. The supramental level of the mind can illuminate and dissolve karmic knots hidden deep within the Unconscious. It has the capacity to enter into the subtle as well as physical realms of reality, shaping biological evolution and revealing a divine consciousness within the density of matter.

Each of these levels of the mind has its own distinct function, and the higher aspects include and integrate the lower aspects. With the descent of the supermind, involution and evolution merge into a single act of creative unfoldment. Creator as Primordial Consciousness is revealed purely and transparently within the field of Creation. I know and experience myself as THAT, and enter consciously and joyfully into the playground of terrestrial life.
